How to become a Member

 

Pre registration trainees who pass their Professional Qualifying Examination (Final Assessment from 2006) and have completed their twelve months' approved pre registration training become eligible to register with the General Optical Council and to become a full Member of the College. Successful examination candidates receive a Pass Pack that includes all the relevant documentation for both GOC registration and College Membership application.

 

Optometrists who did not take up College membership on qualification or who have returned to the profession after a break may apply for membership. They will be required to demonstrate previous success in the College's examination and evidence of their GOC registration.

 

Each new Member undertakes to subscribe to the following conditions and principles whilst a Member of the College:

  • To abide by the Code of Ethics laid down by the College from time to time.
  • To adhere to the conditions of Membership as set out in the Royal Charter and Bye-Laws.
  • To use, if I so wish, the affix MCOptom.
  • To recognise that the College Membership Diploma and permission to use the affix, which I shall receive is conferred on me solely and personally, is not assignable or transferable to any other body or person, and shall not be reproduced, altered or added to in any way.In the event of my ceasing to be a Member to return the College Membership Diploma forthwith and cease using the MCOptom affix.
  • To maintain an effective professional indemnity insurance policy with such an insurer and providing cover of such an amount and against such risks as is reasonable having regard to my circumstances.
  • To pay an annual subscription set by the College.
